Switzerland indicates allowing Putin to attend Ukraine’s meeting on its soil

(MENAFN) Switzerland has indicated it would permit Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend potential Ukraine peace negotiations on its soil without risk of arrest under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant, according to reports.

The announcement follows a weekend in which Putin visited the US, where he was received by President Donald Trump, who later hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and key Western European leaders. Moscow has since confirmed its willingness to participate in additional discussions aimed at achieving a lasting resolution to the Ukraine conflict and signaled that its diplomatic representation at such talks would be elevated.

The ICC issued arrest warrants in 2023 for Putin and Russian Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova over alleged unlawful deportation and transfer of children from former Ukrainian territories. Moscow has dismissed the charges as politically motivated, maintaining that the children were evacuated from conflict zones for their safety.

On Tuesday, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis stated that, under specific circumstances, Putin would be allowed to enter Switzerland. “The Swiss government last year defined the rules for granting immunity to a person under an international arrest warrant. If this person comes for a peace conference – not if they come for private reasons,” Cassis said, according to reports.

He added that Switzerland is “ready for such a meeting,” noting, “We have always signaled our willingness, but it naturally depends on the will of the major powers.” Cassis also emphasized that Switzerland could host a summit “despite the arrest warrant against Putin because of our special role and Geneva’s role as the European headquarters of the UN.”
